Microfiction #10 — The Old and the New

The Old used to vanish so the New could take over. New ideas, New perspectives, New ways of moving society in a more selfless, empathetic direction.

What to do, however, when Old does not go away? Old doesn’t have to die anymore, right? As long as money keeps pouring its way, Old will live forever. With that, Old has now time and experience on its side. Old has set the way of life and we’re stuck with it.

How can New breakthrough when Old has many, many followers, deeply set in their ways? After a couple hundred years, how can New hope to dismantle years and years of brainwashing, prejudice, and selfish righteousness?

Old has a god-like status these days. A quasi-divine feel is linked to its persona, you see. It’s no longer about facts and the truth. Well, it hasn’t been about that in ages, really. It’s about faith, and faith only wants one thing: for belief to be preserved.

It’s madness. Widespread, normalised, common sense flipped on its head madness.

As I scavenge through the remains of DC, I keep thinking about a way out. I must be careful, though, to not bump into any cannibal raiders in MAGA hats.
